Edmonton (map) is the Capital of Alberta with a population of just over a million people in the greater Edmonton area and over 782,000 in the city itself! Edmonton is the northernmost city with a population over 1 million!

Edmonton features the longest stretch of urban parkland (7400 hectares) in North America that winds along the North Saskatchewan River and through the heart of the city.  Within that parkland are over 160 Kilometres of multi-use trails where residents are frequently seen riding bikes, walking or rollerblading throughout the year.

The North Saskatchewan River, a glacier fed river, flows east from the Canadian Rockies through the middle of Edmonton and empties into Lake Winnipeg. There are many different species of fish that can be caught in the North Saskatchewan within the Edmonton city limits.  These include the Walleye, Lake Sturgeon, Pike, Burbot (ling cod), mountain whitefish, gold eye, moon eye and 5 species of Sucker fish.

Weather wise, Edmonton typically has warm summers and cold winters and at times, not a lot in between.  September 2009 is a great example of the weather pendulum swing.  September 23, 2009 hit a high of 33.5 and only two weeks & 2 days later (the day I am writing this, in fact), a high of -2 is expected.  The average highs range from -7 in January to plus 23 in July and lows from -16 in January to +12 in July.  The majority of the time, particularly between April and August, we have the sun shining brightly and the sky a brilliant blue.

Edmonton, considered the city of Champtions, is home to the Edmonton Oilers (NHL) and Edmonton Eskimos (CFL) as well as the Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL) and the Edmonton Capitals (GBL). 

Edmonton is one of Canada's major educations centres featuring the University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan University, Athabasca University, Concordia University College, Kings University College, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, and NorQuest College.
